Ms Fiona Hyslop, Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs, visited Nagasaki University.
On Monday, October 7, 2019, Ms Fiona Hyslop, the Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs, Mr Paul Lewis, the Managing Director of Scottish Development International, and Dr Stephen Baker, the Regional Director Inward Investment Asia Pacific, met with Dr Takeshi Nagayasu, Trustee (Research and International Affairs). The meeting was also attended by Prof Ikuo Yamamoto, Vice President (Industry-University Collaboration), Prof Shigenobu Takeda, Director of the Organization for Marine Science and Technology, Prof Yoshiki Matsushita, Vice-Dean of the Graduate School of Fisheries and Environmental Sciences, and Assoc Prof Pino Cutrone, of the School of Global Humanities and Social Sciences.
This is the second visit to our university by Ms Hyslop who last visited in 2017. During the meeting, she mentioned the increased collaboration between Scotland and Nagasaki University since her last visit. Examples of this collaboration include joint research between industrial, academic, and government organizations in marine energy and aquaculture, and an increase in student exchange. She hopes that these efforts in research and study are further strengthened through various research funds and other schemes such as Saltire Programmes.
After the meeting, a lecture entitled “Opportunities to study and strengthen international collaboration in Scotland” was held. The Scottish government is interested in working with Japanese universities on common issues, such as global warming and aging. Students are encouraged to study in Scotland and apply for UK government scholarships and the “UK in Japan 2020” program, a joint initiative by the British Council and the British Embassy Tokyo. Students and faculty members who attended the lecture actively asked questions, which provided a valuable opportunity to learn about Scotland.
