Nagasaki Higashi High School students participated in a special lecture at the Faculty of Economics

January 20, 2020

On December 20th, the Faculty of Economics hosted 11 members of Nagasaki Higashi High School’s English club and 2 of their teachers to a special lecture on Christmas. In addition to the guests from Nagasaki Higashi High School, 5 Nagasaki University students were in attendance.

Professor Tom of the Center for Language Studies began the Christmas lecture by introducing the custom of writing Christmas cards in the United States. Writing and sending Christmas cards to friends, family and co-workers is a popular holiday tradition in America. It gives Americans an opportunity to keep connections with people in their lives and to share what has happened to them the past year. After the lecture, the participants wrote their own holiday card.

This lecture is part of a series of lectures held in English for Nagasaki Higashi High School that began in 2014. The series was created to promote cooperation between the university and local high schools, expose high school and university students to American culture and provide an opportunity to study and communicate in English. International students from the university, high school and Assistant Language Teachers (ALT) participate from time-to-time, which give the students opportunity to not only study American culture, but other cultures as well.
