Opening Ceremony for “Planetary Health Africa-Japan Strategic and Collaborative Education (PHASE) Program, the MEXT Inter-University Exchange Project on January 28th, 2021

Opening Ceremony for PHASE Program (Planetary Health Africa-Japan Strategic and Collaborative Education Program), which was selected as a MEXT Inter-University Exchange Project, was conducted virtually on January 28th, 2021.
We welcomed the guests: the Minister of Education of Kenya, the Director General/CEO of National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI), the Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Kenya in Japan, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Kenya, and the Director of the Nairobi Research Liaison Center of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. In addition, the ceremony was very spectacular with many faculty members attending from the partners of this program, including the Director of the Central Medical Research Institute of Kenya, the President of Maseno University, the President of Kenyatta University, and the President of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
Through the ceremony, the common understanding that the PHASE program is human resource development programs for the realization of global health from a new perspective has deepened. And, the participants pledged to cooperate and carry out educational and research activities aimed at solving global issues through academic exchanges.
After the ceremony, the 1st Japan-Kenya steering committee meeting was held, consisting of representatives of universities and institution on the Japanese and Kenyan sides. Lively discussions were held, and it was confirmed that both sides will work together toward the online exchange program scheduled to be held in February
