Ukrainian Students Visit Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Museum as Part of "Nagasaki Peace Studies" Special Lecture

On Tuesday, July 26, eight Ukrainian students participated in the "Nagasaki Peace Studies" special lecture, a part of the Summer Program held annually at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. In the morning, they attended a special lecture given by Prof. Fumihiko Yoshida, Director of the Research Center for Nuclear Weapons Abolition (RECNA), and Prof. Michiru Nishida of the School of Global Humanities and Social Sciences. Afterward, participants actively exchanged opinions in small groups about whether different national and historical backgrounds make a difference in their awareness of nuclear abolition and world peace, what kind of contributions they can make, and whether there are common ideals among them.

The group toured the facilities in the afternoon, heading to Peace Park. The weather was clear, and the sun shone brightly. Still, the participants listened attentively to the explanations given by Professor Hideki Nakayama of the Faculty of Environmental Science and Assistant Professor Taeko Moriyasu of the Office for Global Relations. During the subsequent visit to Peace Memorial Museum, the students looked around the exhibits on the themes of their interest.

Participating Ukrainian students commented, "I am grateful to Nagasaki University for arranging this special lecture. I felt that we need to remember how terrible it is to use nuclear weapons." "I learned how important it is to reduce the number of nuclear weapons, and my knowledge has expanded. I was able to learn about the nuclear weapons problem not only in Japan but also in other countries." "The students also had a chance to express their opinions after attending the lecture, which was a good experience."
