On December 11th 2024, Nagasaki University held a kick-off symposium for the Brazil Research Station of the Center for the Control and Prevention of Infectious Disease (CCPID) at Nagasaki University, which was established within the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) in January 2024.

From Nagasaki University, President Nagayasu Takeshi, Director of the Brazil Research Station Professor Yasuda Jiro, Professor Inaoka Ken Daniel, Associate Professor Kobayashi Junko, Associate Professor Abe Haruka, and Professor Furuse Yuki (the University of Tokyo) attended the symposium. From UFPE, the Director of the Keizo Asami Institute, Prof. José Luiz Lima Filho, and five other joint researchers were in attendance and gave lectures.
The symposium was also attended by Mr. Sano Hiroaki, Consul-General of Japan in Recife, and Mr. Aoki Issei, Deputy Director of JICA Brazil Office, who both gave opening remarks. At the symposium, the findings of infectious disease research at both universities were presented, future prospects were touched upon, and a resident even gave President Nagayasu a portrait drawn of himself. There were over 100 participants at the symposium, including UFPE faculty and staff.
In addition, the group visited the Keizo Asami Institute at the Federal University of Pernambuco, where the Brazil Research Station for the CCPID at Nagasaki University is located, and received an explanation from Keizo Asami Institute Director, Prof. José Luiz Lima Filho about the installation status of experimental equipment, as well as a tour of the P3 and P2 laboratories that the Brazil Research Station is preparing to install.
