On Wednesday, February 5, 2020, President Kohno met with Dr. Aye Myint, Director General of the Department of Vocational Training from the Ministry of Education of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. Two other delegates included Dr. Win Tun, Director General of Education Research, Planning, and Training, and Dr. Yin Myo Thu, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Higher Education. Also present from Nagasaki University (NU) were Akihide Tada, Vice President of International Exchange, Hiroshi Matsuda, Dean of the Graduate School of Engineering, and Shuji Tanabe, Professor of Engineering.
The Graduate School of Engineering participates in JICA’s “Project for Enhancement of Engineering Higher Education in Myanmar” along with Chiba University, Niigata University, Kanazawa University, Okayama University, Kumamoto University, and Kyoto University. NU contributes to this project by sending faculty members to Yangon Technological University and Mandalay Technological University and provides teacher training, research guidance, and research support in the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical power engineering, electronic engineering, computer engineering and information science, and mechatronic engineering.
Director General Aye Myint and the delegates visited the Graduate School of Engineering where they observed how the post-graduate education and joint research with private companies are conducted at NU. They also toured local businesses in Nagasaki Prefecture to learn about industry-academia collaboration.
During the meeting President Kohno expressed the hope that Myanmar students who study at NU will have a leading role in the development of Myanmar. Director General Aye Myint recommended the expansion of scholarship programs to increase the number of Myanmar students who study in Japan.
