Energy Harvesting Smart Buoy has won the Runner-up Semi Grand Prix in the Carbon Neutral Category at the CEATEC Awards 2021.

Energy Harvesting Smart Buoy jointly developed by the Organization for Marine Science and Technology and Kyocera Corporation has won the Runner-up Semi Grand Prix in the Carbon Neutral Category at the CEATEC Awards 2021.
CEATEC is known as one of Asia's largest international exhibitions of IT, IoT technologies, and electronics products.  CEATEC Award 2021 is presented to the most outstanding technology and product among the latest products, solutions, and services gathered in one place.
Energy Harvesting Smart Buoy uses tidal current power generation technology to supply power to communication devices and various sensors built into buoys installed at sea, enabling the continuous collection of oceanographic data. Continuous acquisition of ocean data is now essential to address environmental issues such as ocean pollution and rising sea temperatures. However, obtaining stable power over a long period has been a challenge.
Energy Harvesting Smart Buoy has been acclaimed for its contribution to the DX of the marine industry, as experiments at sea have shown that its highly efficient turbines can respond to the ever-changing tides and generate more electricity than it consumes.
Professor Daisaku Sakaguchi of the Organization for Marine Science and Technology, who was involved in the development of the buoy, said, "we are delighted that our Energy Harvesting Smart Buoy concept has been so well received. Kyocera and Nagasaki University have been thinking about the future of ocean development and have been developing this technology because we believe it will be needed. I hope this will be one of the opportunities for many people to think about the future of ocean development." He expressed his delight at receiving the award.
