President's speech at the Agreement on Academic Cooperation
with Belarussian State Medical University

July 25, 2006

It is a great pleasure for Nagasaki University to have renewed the Agreement on Academic Cooperation with Belarussian State Medical University today.

We concluded our first Agreement in 1996. Since then, we have developed a wide range of constructive exchange activities over the past ten years, such as providing visiting professors and researchers with training programs at our Atomic Bomb Disease Institute, conducting collaborative research in late effects of radiation including childhood thyroid cancer which is dramatically increased around Chernobyl, and publishing textbooks for doctors and medical students in Belarus. Moreover, for the past eight years from 1998 to this year, some junior and senior students of our School of Medicine have been visiting Belarussian State Medical University every winter to have basic and clinical training and to interact with local medical students. I was told that President Bespalchuk, who is present here, and his staff, who have studied at Nagasaki University through the aforementioned programs, have been devoting themselves to receiving our students. I cannot thank them enough for their enthusiasm and endeavor.

Starting from tomorrow, the Second Nagasaki Symposium of International Consortium for Medical Care of Hibakusha and Radiation Life Science, 21st Century COE Program, will take place. I am looking forward to seeing our productive achievements introduced at the Symposium.

I would like to conclude my words with the hope that our Universities will build ever closer ties in research and education during the next five years of this second renewal of our Agreement.
