President's speech at the Agreement on Academic Cooperation with National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology

October 12, 2006

It is a great pleasure for Nagasaki University to have renewed the Agreement on Academic Cooperation with National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Vietnam today.

We concluded our first Agreement in 2001. Since then, we have developed a wide range of collaborative studies on emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases using all available opportunities such as JSPS Core University Program. Our tight collaboration has realized more than 20 mutual visits by researchers every year to advance the control strategy on tropical infectious diseases. It is quite encouraging to our university, which is aiming for an international academic center, to see that your researches and ours work together or discuss keenly whenever I visit Institute of Tropical Medicine. Basing on this routine collaboration, we have honorably succeeded to establish an additional platform for scientific collaboration in 2005 as Research Center for Clinical Epidemiology of Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases, and 5 our staff work with yours at The Friendship Laboratory of Nagasaki University and National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology which was kindly provided by your institute in Hanoi.

Reminding the above progress during 5 years of the first term, I have strong confidence that the renewal of this agreement is surely effective to yield more fruits to overcome a global issue of infectious diseases, and culture scientists in health science, especially young ones, of both sides.
