President's Congratulatory Address at the Opening Ceremony of The Third China-Japan Joint Seminar for the Graduate Students

October 21, 2006

Ladies and gentlemen, guests of honor, good morning.
I am Hiroshi Saito, President of Nagasaki University.

Please allow me first to express my sincerest appreciation to Tongji Universityfs many researchers and students for their participation in The Second Japan-China Joint Seminar that Nagasaki University hosted last August.
The event is still vividly retained in my memory.

22 academic staff members and graduate school students from Nagasaki University will join the Seminar today, and 13 academic papers of ours will be presented and discussed later today.
I would like to convey my gratitude to the people of Tongji University who devoted themselves to make this magnificent Third China-Japan Joint Seminar possible.
Graduate students are the glorious hope and driving power of our countries, and it is they who must shoulder the responsibility for promoting academic and cultural exchange.
The China-Japan Joint Seminar is a precious opportunity for those who wish to make the world their stage in the field of engineering.

As you may know, Nagasaki was the only Japanese city to maintain academic and cultural exchange with Asian and European countries, even during Japanese periods of isolation, as well as the base for aspiring young people who set their hearts on learning.
Today, Nagasaki University has become a very significant Japanese university in many disciplines, and it engages in a number of international activities.
It also contributes to the harmonious development of human welfare and global peace by forming students with distinguished abilities through education and research.

We know that Shanghai is the gateway to China, and Tongji University is one of the most prestigious universities in China.
It is our great pleasure to have a meeting with such an outstanding University here in Shanghai.
I believe that this Seminar will be truly meaningful for all participants from Nagasaki University.

Thank you very much for your kind attention.
