President's Address at the Signing Ceremony of the Agreement on Academic Cooperation among the Department of Medical Science, the Department of Medical Research (Lower Myanmar), and Nagasaki University Yangon, Myanmar

February 20, 2007

Your Excellency Professor and Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Health Paing Soe, Professor and Director General of the Department of Medical Science Than Myint, Acting Director General of the Department of Medical Research (Lower Myanmar) Dr. Kyaw Min, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen: Please allow me to extend my gratitude to you for cordially inviting me to this significant ceremony.

Japan has had a long history of close and friendly relationship with Myanmar since the 16th century. The Japanese profoundly respect and revere Burmese peoplefs extensive intelligence and peace-loving nature. We adore this beautiful country, Myanmar.

It is a great honor for Nagasaki University to have concluded the Agreement on Academic Cooperation with such an esteemed countryfs Department of Medical Science and Department of Medical Research (Lower Myanmar).

Since the 1980fs, we have promoted a wide range of collaborative studies in the medical sciences, taking advantage of all possible opportunities.

Our close-knit cooperation has been realized in the exchange of researchers, including Professor Takehiko Koji, Professor Emeritus Shigeru Okada, and the former Professor Paul Nakane, more than 30 times over during almost 30 years, for the advancement of the medical sciences.

It will be a big motive for Nagasaki University, which aspires to be the internationally-recognized academic center of medical science, for moving forward to see that our two nationsf competent scientists will work ever harder together and exchange new opinions here and in Nagasaki.

When considering the progress during the next five years of our first contract term, I am very confident that the conclusion of this agreement will help yield more outstanding results and contribute to the better development of human resources in medicine of both countries, especially among young professionals.

I would like to close my speech by expressing my sincerest appreciation to the people who have committed themselves to making todayfs impressive signing ceremony possible.

Thank you for your attention.
