President's Complimentary Address at Graduation Ceremony of Master of Tropical Medicine Course, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

March 23, 2007

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, please allow me to introduce myself.

I am Hiroshi Saito, President of Nagasaki University.

I would like to express my sincere congratulations to the 11 distinguished people who are graduating today. As you all know, the School of Medicine was established in 1857 and has a history of 150 years, which is the oldest among 12 faculties, graduate schools, and one institute.

Meanwhile, the Master of Tropical Medicine Course in which you earned your degree is the youngest program, just set up last April.

This Master Course has continued its remarkable development, and today, 11 musketeers have been born. Who were you fathered by?

Of course, by the Institute of Tropical Medicine.

Newborn musketeers like you are vigorous and full of energy.

I believe that you will someday defeat the tropical infectious diseases, the worldfs leading cause of death and the enemy of mankind.

Nagasaki University will never forget each one of you. We are very proud of you.

You will soon be leaving for your country. I hope you will have a safe and happy trip home.

I wish you good luck and please take very good care of yourselves until we meet again. Thank you for your attention.
