Welcome
to Nagasaki University
Nagasaki
flourished as a receiving point for Asian and European continental
cultures and as a sending off point of Japanese culture to the
outside world before the Isolation period, and played a role
as the only international point of interaction with the wider
world after the Isolation period. Many young people were attracted
to Nagasaki from all over Japan.
Nagasaki was the goal for people who set their hearts on learning.
The exotic town of Nagasaki has been built under these historical
backgrounds.
The history of Nagasaki University goes all the way back to November 12th,
1857 when the Dutch naval surgeon J.L.C.Pompe van Meerdervoort established
Igaku Denshusho, the oldest medical school in Japan, in Nagasaki. The Igaku
Denshusho was completely destroyed on August 9th, 1945 by the atomic bomb
but miraculously revived like a phoenix. It has now grown into a very important
university that comprises eight faculties (Education, Economics, Medicine,
Dentistry, Pharmacy, Engineering, Environmental Studies, and Fisheries),
two affiliated hospitals, main libraries with two branch libraries, and
the Institute of Tropical Medicine. Over 9,000 students are currently learning
at Nagasaki University, with international students from a number of countries
including Asian countries.
The scope of studies extends widely, ranging from Life Sciences
to Environmental Studies. Nagasaki University's academic level
is extremely advanced, furthermore, this fiscal year a total
of up to 300 million yen has been granted for A Grant for advanced
researches of clinical medicine "Therapeutic approach for
human prion diseases" and our education research body "International
Consortium for Medical Care of Hibakusha and Radiation Life Science" has
been appointed as the 21st century COE Program of Ministry of
Education,Culture,Sport,Science and Technology.
The mission of Nagasaki University is to contribute to harmonious
development of human welfare and global peace by fostering people
of distinguished abilities through education and research.
I sincerely hope that Nagasaki University will be of great benefit
to the world, Asia, and Japan as an indispensable university. |
