Presidentfs Speech at Singing Ceremony of the Agreement on Academic Cooperation between Jimei University and Nagasaki University

August 9, 2007

I am very honored to have concluded the Agreement on Academic Cooperation with prestigious Jimei University which has been making significant contributions to the development of Chinafs arts and sciences, education, culture, politics, economy, and other vital areas, and has produced many internationally renowned personnel.

First of all, please allow me to express my deepest appreciation to President Jian-De Gu, Professor Min-Jie Cao, and other competent staff of Jimei University for their sincerest dedication in making this Agreement possible.

Nagasaki has historically strong ties with China from a long time ago and has been powerfully influenced by Chinese culture. Even when Japan closed itself off from the outside world for more than 250 years from the 17th century, culture and information were brought from China through Nagasaki. As you can see, Nagasaki is the Japanese city most intensely affected by Chinese lights in arts and culture. As a memorial to those times past with China, historic structures still can be spotted around the city, such as the Spectacles Bridge (Megane-bashi), Confucius Shrine (Koushi-byo), Chinese temples, and the popular Chinatown, one of Japanfs most bustling tourist areas. The Chinese New Year Festival every year also attracts many tourists from all over Japan to enjoy the colorful glamour of traditional festivities presented by Nagasaki residents of Chinese ancestry.

Nagasaki University implements international exchange with the philosophy of gOnly cordial interaction with each other advances genuine friendshiph.

Todayfs Agreement on Academic Cooperation is a great gift resulting from the recent successful joint research in marine toxins and food science by Professor Min-Jie Cao and Professor Song Zhen Rong, who graduated from the Nagasaki University Graduate School of Science and Technology, and Professor Chen Chang Sheng, who used to be a visiting professor of the Nagasaki University Faculty of Fisheries, of Jimei University, Professor Katsuyasu Tachibana, Professor Osamu Arakawa, Professor Kenji Hara, and Associate Professor Tomohiro Takatani of Nagasaki University, and other relevant scientists.

I am very happy and proud to know that three people who have studied or taught at Nagasaki University are now taking the lead in research at Jimei University.
I would like to take a moment here to extend my gratitude to these professors who have built a new relationship between Jimei University and Nagasaki University.

I truly hope that our collaborative studies in broader fields and the exchange of graduate students and researchers will be boosted in the future.

I would like to conclude my speech by wishing our Universitiesf further prosperity and even deeper friendship.
Thank you very much for your kind attention.
