President's Greeting at the Signing Ceremony with Northeast Normal University in Changchun, China

August 20, 2007

Today, the memorandum on student exchanges between Northeast Normal University and Nagasaki University has been successfully concluded and I feel highly honored to be here and to give this address. Northeast Normal University is a central institution of teaching science in China, and has produced many capable persons active on the international stage.

First of all, as the representative of Nagasaki University, I express sincere gratitude to President Shi Ningzhong, Assistant Director An Zaihe of the Division of International Cooperative & Exchange, and other staff members of Northeast Normal University for your kind endeavor toward the conclusion of the agreement.

On the subject of the connection between China and Nagasaki, there have been close relations between the two since olden times, and Nagasaki has been greatly influenced by Chinese culture. Even during Japan's period of isolation, which lasted from the 17th century for more than two hundred and fifty years, Chinese culture, science and information entered Japan through Nagasaki. Nagasaki was the only window on the world in those days.
Consequently, Nagasaki, among all the cities of Japan, has been most strongly influenced by Chinese arts and sciences.
Even today, we can see Megane-bridge, Confucian Temple, Chinese Temples and one of the most outstanding Chinatowns in Japan. These old buildings remind us of our long relations with China. Furthermore, eNagasaki Lantern Festival' celebrates the New Year in Chinese fashion. This festival has been yearly observed by Chinese merchants living in Nagasaki and attracts a lot of tourists from all over Japan.

Nagasaki University's policy of international exchange sees good faith as the key to helping develop and deepen a real friendship.

And what new relation can be formed in the field of college education and research in this new age? I believe it is an active relationship with good faith among students and young researchers who come together from all over the world.

Northeast Normal University and Nagasaki University have to create a system which enables students and young researchers to cooperate with each other in their study, and this agreement is the first step to realizing this. I cherish the hope that in the near future students and researchers of both universities are actively studying and exchanging their ideas on one another's campus.

It is through the continuous exchange of ideas between Professor Ma Yunpeng of Northeast Normal University and Professor Tateo Hashimoto, the dean of the Faculty of Education at Nagasaki University and Professor Ibuki Horiuchi, the vice-dean of the same faculty that this agreement has been successfully signed today.

These professors of both universities have created a hopeful prospect for the future of Nagasaki University, and thanking these professors from the bottom of my heart, I conclude my address as the president of Nagasaki University. She-she.
