President's Complimentary Address at the 70th Anniversary of Fujian Medical University

December 8, 2007

Honorable President Yuanzhong Chen of Fujian Medical University, ladies and gentlemen, please allow me to introduce myself. I am Hiroshi Saito, President of Nagasaki University.

I am very pleased and honored to deliver this congratulatory speech on the memorable 70th anniversary of Fujian Medical University, on behalf of the representatives of the world's renowned universities attending today's ceremony.

Nagasaki has had strong ties with China from a long time ago. Even during the 300-year-long national isolation that started from the 17th century, Chinese culture, studies, and information were brought to Japan through Nagasaki, which was the only city to maintain exchange with other countries. As you can infer, the impact of Chinese culture on the development of Nagasaki has been the most intense among all the other cities of Japan.

Nagasaki still maintains its amicable relations with China, particularly with Fujian, and there are many people living in Nagasaki who are deeply related to Fujian. With such a historical background, Nagasaki Prefecture established a sister city relationship with Fujian, as did Nagasaki City and Fujian's capital, Fuzhou.

Academic exchange between Fujian Medical University and Nagasaki University all started when we discussed potential scholarly interaction and concluded a memorandum in 1996. Then, in 2001, we signed an Agreement on Academic Cooperation, and from then to the present, various projects have been carried out as sister schools, including mutual visits of researchers, hosting of seminars, implementation of collaborative research, and publication of joint papers.

When I first visited Fujian Medical University 17 years ago, I was given this commemorative red badge saying gFujian Medical Universityh, which I have treasured to this day. I am proud to attend today's great ceremony wearing the badge feeling like an alumnus of this prestigious University. I would like to express my sincere congratulations to all of you on your 70th founding anniversary.

Now, Fujian Medical University, founded in 1937, has over 20,000 faculty/administration staff and students after those 70 years. Not only medicine, but other faculties such as science, management, and law have progressed, and in the educational system, the bachelor's, master's, and doctor's courses have been organized. It is also well known that the University has greatly contributed to the betterment of China's education, health programs, and especially to the building up of the economic zone on the west coast of the Taiwan Straits.

Moreover, Fujian Medical University has produced a multitude of prominent human resources who have accomplished distinguished works at home and abroad. I would like to express my sincere respect for the University in its dedicated efforts through education toward the greater advancement of China and the rest of the world.

Fujian Medical University has set an excellent example for us. And Japan respects China. It is my wish and hope for ever deeper friendship between China and Japan, to work in cooperation, to educate many competent personnel, and to be committed ourselves to the development of research.

I would like to conclude this complementary address by once again extending my heartiest congratulations on the 70th anniversary of the foundation and wishing Fujian Medical University further development and prosperity.
