Presidentfs Address at the Signing Ceremony of Academic Agreement Renewal

February 1, 2008

Honorable Director Mykola Tronko of the Institute of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Professor Nataliya Korol of the Research Centre for Radiation Medicine, Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, and Rector Tolebay Rakhypbekov of the Semipalatinsk State Medical Academy, I am very pleased and proud that the Agreements on Academic Cooperation were renewed today between three research institutes and Nagasaki University.

I feel also honored to have President Pavel Bespalchuk of the Belarussian State Medical University and Vice Director Victor Ivanov of the Medical Radiological Research Center of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences with us, whose research institutes updated their academic agreements last year.

Ever since Nagasaki University, the Institute of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and the Research Center for Radiation Medicine signed the Agreement on Academic Cooperation at the 21st Century COE Symposium held in Nagasaki in February, 2003, we have maintained vigorous interaction for five years. I visited Ukraine in 2003 myself with Chairman Tetsuya Iseki of the Nagasaki Association for Hibakushasf Medical Care, and witnessed how diligently and industriously they were working on their research.

Before that, we had already concluded the academic agreement with the Semipalatinsk State Medical Academy of Republic of Kazakhstan in March, 1998, and have continued productive exchange for 10 long years. Every year, we have conferred the Nagasaki International Medical Student Encouragement Award on medical students there. In August, 2008, I was granted an honorary doctorate from the Semipalatinsk State Medical Academy. I take a special pride in that great honor.

Another five-year contract has been made possible by our unceasing scholarly exchange under the strong leadership of todayfs respected guests. I would like to convey my sincerest appreciation to all of them.

The First International Symposium on Establishment of a New Discipline gMedical Care for Hibakushah of Global COE is now being held in Nagasaki since January 31st. This Symposium is the very first stage of activities associated with Global COE.

I am genuinely glad that the joint efforts of Nagasaki University and the five Universities and research institutes, which have renewed this academic agreement today and last year, and whose representatives are present at todayfs ceremony, will be able to give a strong boost to the worldfs leading research on radiation and health issues. I firmly believe in the great success of our endeavors now and in the future.

Thank you very much for your attention.
