April 8, 2008

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon.
Please allow me to introduce myself.
I am Hiroshi Saito, President of Nagasaki University.

I have great pleasure in joining you on this special occasion to celebrate the entrance ceremony of the Master of Tropical Medicine Course.

Nagasaki University celebrated its 150th Anniversary in November, last year since the establishment in 1857.

Our aim has always been to claim and maintain world-class research standards, and as we pursue this we have established particularly high reputation in the research and education of infectious diseases.

Today, the Master of Tropical Medicine will add a new page in its history to boost our efforts to improve education and research of infectious diseases and nurture more specialists in this area.

A one year postgraduate course specializing in Tropical Medicine is first of its kind in Japan and we aim to become the worldfs leading School for postgraduate infectious disease training.

You are the third students to enroll to this course.

We are proud and happy that we have students from many parts of the world.

I have no doubt that the graduates of this course will someday defeat the tropical infectious diseases, the worldfs leading cause of death and the enemy of mankind.

gStudent-Customer-Ismh is the motto of Nagasaki University, so Nagasaki University promises its full support to you, and I wish you the best of achievements and good health during your stay in Nagasaki.

Thank you for your attention.
