Presidentfs greeting at the signing treaty

June 30, 2008

On behalf of Nagasaki University, I would like to express my cordial welcome message to Professor Otari Khurtsilava, Rector of Saint Petersburg Medical Academy for Postgraduate Studies, and three representatives, here with us today, and also to make our congratulatory remarks for the conclusion of our academic agreement.

There is nothing more pleasing to us than the signing of our academic agreement with Saint Petersburg Medical Academy for Postgraduate Studies, which is one of the two high prestigious medical academies in Russian federations, in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, respectively. Similar to the historical significance of Nagasaki in Japan, the old capital Saint Petersburg is really the center of education and art in Russia, having such as a world-famous Hermitage Museum, where since 1991 has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Looking back on our mutual relations, it all began when Professor Khurstilava visited officially at the WHO Headquarter in Geneva in 2005 and discussed about the future cooperative project with Professor Yamashita when he was dispatched from Nagasaki University as a scientist of the WHO radiation program. Then two institutes have exchanged the specialists each other to reach mutual agreement on cooperative research. Nagasaki University plans to carry out basic research and clinical trial on radiation medicine and regenerative medicine at Saint Petersburg Medical Academy for Postgraduate Studies, as a part of the Global COE Program, gGlobal Strategic Center for Radiation Health Risk Controlh of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

The academic agreement is expected to further advance exchange program and research between Russia and Japan and enables Nagasaki University doctors and health workers to participate in both basic and clinical projects in Saint Petersburg.

I believe our cooperation in the control of health risk in general will contribute greatly to the health of mankind.

Thank you very much.
