President's Speech at Signing Ceremony of the Agreement on Academic Cooperation between University of Bari and Nagasaki University

July 10, 2008

Signora, Signore, Signorine !
Buongiorno

I am very honored to have concluded the Agreement on Academic Cooperation with prestigious University of Bari which has been making significant contributions to the development of Italian's arts and sciences, education, culture, politics, economy, and other vital areas and has produced many internationally renowned personnel.

First of all, please allow me to express my deepest appreciation to Rector Corrado Petrocelli, Prof. Riccardo d'Agostino and other competent staff of University of Bari for their sincerest dedication in making this Agreement possible.

Nagasaki has historically strong ties with Europe from a long time ago. Even during the period of national isolation, which lasted more than 250 years from the 17th century, much learning, culture, and other information were brought from Europe to Japan through Nagasaki. As you can see, Nagasaki is the Japanese city most intensely affected by European lights in arts and culture.

Today's Agreement on Academic Cooperation is a great gift resulting from the successful joint research in Plasma Science for the past four years by Professor Riccardo d'Agostino, Director of the Plasma and Polymer Research Center, of University of Bari, and Professor Hiroshi Fujiyama of Nagasaki University, and other relevant scientists.

I would like to take a moment here to extend my gratitude to these professors who have built a new relationship between University of Bari and Nagasaki University.

I truly hope that our collaborative studies in broader fields and the exchange of graduate students and researchers will be boosted in the future.

I would like to conclude my speech by wishing our Universities' further prosperity and even deeper friendship.

" Grazie mille ! "
