Presidentfs speech at the 60th anniversary of
National Kaohsiung Marine University

May 5, 2006

Please allow me to take this occasion to congratulate you on the 60th anniversary of the prestigious National Kaohsiung Marine University. I am privileged to be invited to this glorious ceremony and share the joy of this very special jubilee with all of you.

Your University has achieved a most satisfactory level of performance in research and education of aquaculture, navigation skills, and food manufacturing, and taken the lead in these areas. This is primarily due to the tireless efforts of the previous presidents and faculty and administrative staff, as well as to those who are now carrying on the good work begun. I would like to express profound respect for those people and wish your University further progress.

Given this grand opportunity, I am very honored to bestow on behalf of Nagasaki University our gDistinguished Alumni Awardh on President Chen, Che-Tsung.

After finishing Nagasaki University Graduate School of Fisheries Science in March, 1974, President Chen proceeded to The University of Tokyo, Faculty of Agriculture, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, where he was awarded a degree of Doctor of Agriculture. After returning home, as a professor of his alma mater, National Taiwan Ocean University, he did his best to foster younger researchers even while pursuing his own research. Some twenty years later, as soon as he assumed the presidency of National Kaohsiung Institute of Marine Technology, he struggled persistently to have it promoted to university status. His efforts finally produced results, and National Kaohsiung Marine University was established. Consequently, the graduate school was set up, and the University has developed into a leading research body in Taiwanfs fisheries oceanography study.

He also worked hard on reforming fisheries education in Taiwan, and devoted himself to advancing aquaculture, navigation skills by using simulation, a wide variety of fisheries industries ranging from deep-sea fishery to coastal fixed net fishery, food manufacturing, and so on, especially practical education in these fields.

In addition, he is regarded as the foremost expert in Taiwan on the life history of elasmobranchii, which he has been continuing ever since he was a student in Japan, and he energetically participates in various international symposia and academic societies aside from his official duties and social contributions.

Furthermore, he is successful in keeping a close relationship with Nagasaki University. He arranged to put his studentsf training ship into Nagasaki Harbor to boost exchange activities with our Faculty of Fisheries. In May, 2005, National Kaohsiung Marine University concluded the very first academic agreement with an overseas research institute, and Nagasaki University became its first academic partner.

I hereby confer the gDistinguished Alumni Awardh on President Chen in praise of his outstanding achievements as a Nagasaki University alumnus and his great endeavor to raise the Universityfs honor.
