Nagasaki University-Leiden University International Online Symposium on The Clinical Sciences of Healthy Ageing, held on 27 November 2020

The online symposium on The Clinical Sciences of Healthy Ageing, co-organized by Leiden University Medical Center and Nagasaki University’s School of Medicine and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences was held on 27 November. Approximately 100 people participated in Ryojun Hall and through online.

Nagasaki University and Leiden University signed an academic exchange agreement in 1989. Since then, the two universities have carried out academic exchanges through joint research by faculty members and through student exchange. The Nagasaki University School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in particular have regularly held joint symposia with Leiden University. This year the COVID-19 crisis made it difficult to hold the joint symposium on Healthy Ageing.  However, the both universities reached out across the border and successfully conducted the symposium through online (Zoom).

With a theme on "Healthy Ageing," the symposium consisted of lectures on the research of disease in the elderly, clinical interventions and prevention in ageing. It began with welcome remarks by Professor Takeshi Nagayasu, Vice-President and Trustee of Research and International Affairs at Nagasaki University, Professor Pancras Hogendoorn, Dean, Leiden University Medical Center, and Professor Koji Maemura, Dean, Nagasaki University School of Medicine, followed by two keynote speeches and four clinical lectures. Professor Atushi Kawakami, Dean, Nagasaki University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences concluded the symposium with a closing remark.
