Statement to condemn the invasion of Ukraine and "nuclear threat” by Russia

Nagasaki University reiterates our strong condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In particular, its leader's remarks that suggest the use of nuclear weapons betrays the desire of Nagasaki University and the citizens of Nagasaki for the abolition of nuclear weapons, and is totally unacceptable.

Among the victims of the Nagasaki Atomic Bombing were the precious lives of nearly 1,000 students, as well as faculty and staff members, of the educational and research institution that was the predecessor of Nagasaki University. Since then, as the only university in the world that has inherited a medical college having experienced the devastation of the atomic bombing, the realization of a world free from nuclear weapons and the pursuit of peace have been key issues for Nagasaki University. We strongly urge Russia to halt its armed aggression as soon as possible and achieve a peaceful solution through diplomacy.

Nagasaki University, which has a long history of exchange with Ukraine in the areas of victim assistance of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident and research on Radiation Medical Science, issues this statement with sincere wishes for the safety of the people of Ukraine and the restoration of peace.
