On July 11-12, 2024, the 15th Nagasaki-Singapore Medical Symposium was held by the Nagasaki University School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and the Vaccine Research and Development Center DEJIMA Infectious Disease Research Alliance Nagasaki University. Eleven researchers active in the fields of infectious diseases and immunology from the National University of Singapore (NUS) were invited. Approximately 110 researchers from Japan and abroad participated in the symposium.

The first symposium was held in 1984 when a delegation led by Masatoshi Mimura, Vice Governor of Nagasaki Prefecture at that time, visited Singapore. As a result of this exchange, in 1985, the medical schools of Nagasaki University and the National University of Singapore signed an academic exchange agreement, which has led to the current exchange between the two medical schools.
Since 2006, symposiums have been held every other year at both universities, in the field of infectious diseases. However, the last symposium to be held was the NUS-sponsored symposium in Singapore in 2019, with subsequent symposiums cancelled due to COVID-19. It was held this year for the first time in five years.
The symposium began with opening remarks by President Nagayasu, Professor Nicholas Gascoigne, Dean Kawakami of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and Dean Ikematsu of the School of Medicine, followed by oral presentations by a total of 32 researchers. The keynote speeches were outstanding and there was barely enough time for all of them. Lively Q&A sessions were held after each, providing an opportunity for audience members to gain new insight into each other's research in the field of infectious diseases.

There was also a poster session held with posters provided by 30 young researchers. It was an opportunity for young researchers, who are usually involved in clinical clerkships and conducting research, to become aware of the latest research results and receive inspiration.

The 16th symposium is planned to be held in Singapore in 2026, in two years. We hope to further deepen exchange between researchers at Nagasaki University and National University of Singapore so that we can continue to hold this historic symposium, which began in 1984 and which has been held after overcoming many hardships.
