At the ILCAJ-SCN Workshop 2024 held at Ritsumeikan University Osaka Ibaraki Campus from August 20 to 22, 2024, Seiyo Iwamoto, a third-year undergraduate student at the faculty of Environmental Science (Associate Professor Suk Sunhee’s laboratory), made a presentation titled "Estimating the Household Carbon Footprint in South Korea in the Context of an Aging Society" and won the Outstanding Presentation Award.
This research examines the increasing contribution of anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs) from daily activities and quantifies GHG emissions resulting from household consumption. Household consumption is influenced by demographic trends, including population growth or decline and shifts in the population structure.
In this context, Iwamoto, under the co-supervision of Associate Professor Yosuke Shigetomi(Lab HP) at Ritsumeikan University and in collaboration with Dr. Jemyung Lee at Research Institute for Humanity, conducted the study on Korea, which is facing a rapidly declining birthrate and increasingly aging population. His research is expected to offer policy recommendations for promoting GHG reduction, focusing on household consumption within an aging Korean Society in the future. This led to his presentation was highly praised and he received an award.
