On August 26, Dr. Phan Trong Lan, Director and Dr. Tran Nhu Duong, Deputy Director of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) of Vietnam, paid a courtesy visit to President Nagayasu.
Established in 1926 as the Hanoi Pasteur Institute, the institute plays a central role in the prevention and control of diseases in Vietnam.
Exchange between NIHE and Nagasaki University began in 1985, when the Institute of Tropical Medicine provided technical support for the laboratory diagnosis of Japanese encephalitis and dengue fever and for the domestic production of a Japanese encephalitis vaccine. In 2000, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science adopted a project for exchange between research stations for the factors of emerging and reemerging tropical infectious diseases and their prevention, and in June 2005 with the conclusion of an agreement for academic exchange, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) initiated a program to establish a center for research on emerging and reemerging infectious diseases, and the NIHE-Nagasaki University Friendship Lab was established as an overseas research center within the Institute.
Since then, the Institute of Tropical Medicine has been actively engaged in research exchanges with NIHE, and since 2020 has been promoting the “Nagasaki University Research Project on Infectious Diseases in Vietnam” (a joint research project on clinical epidemiology of emerging infectious diseases prevalent in Vietnam).
Director Phan Trong Lan and his team came to Nagasaki University to discuss the activity plan for future joint research projects and further strengthening of cooperation between Nagasaki University and NIHE for the next program, as the fourth phase of the program will end this year.
The meeting with President Nagayasu was attended by Dr. Masako Ito, Director for Student and International Affairs, Dr. Osamu Kaneko, Director of the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Dr. Koichi Morita, Director of the Dejima Special Zone for Infectious Disease Research, and Dr. Futoshi Hasebe, Director of the NIHE Vietnam Research Center, and the two sides had a friendly discussion about further development of future exchange and President Nagayasu's visit to Vietnam.
