Nagasaki Higashi High School students participated in a special lecture at the Faculty of Economics

On October 28th, the Faculty of Economics hosted 17 members of Nagasaki Higashi High School’s English club and 3 of their teachers to a special lecture on Halloween. In addition to the guests from Nagasaki Higashi High School, 2 Nagasaki University students were in attendance.

Professor Tom of the Center for Language Studies began the Halloween lecture by introducing The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a horror film that debuted in 1975. The participants learnt the reasons why it became so popular. One of the reasons is the props the audience will use that connect to the action of the movie, such as wearing a newspaper on their heads as the lead actress does in a rain storm or party hats during a celebration scene. Then, the participants could experience some of what makes the movie special by wearing newspapers on their heads during a viewing of the rainstorm scene and making party hats for the celebration scene.

This lecture is part of a series of lectures held in English for Nagasaki Higashi High School, a Super Global High School (SGH), that began in 2014. The series was created to promote cooperation between the university and local high schools, expose high school and university students to American culture and provide an opportunity to study and communicate in English. International students from the university, high school participate and Assistant Language Teachers (ALT) from time-to-time, which give the students opportunity to not only study American culture, but other cultures as well.
