Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, H.E. Mr. Van der Vliet visited Nagasaki University.

On Tuesday, November 10, 2020, His Excellency Mr. Peter Van der Vliet, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Japan, paid a courtesy visit to President Kohno Shigeru of Nagasaki University.

This is the third time Ambassador Mr. Van der Vliet visited Nagasaki since his arrival in Tokyo in August 2019. This time he gave a lecture to the students of Nagasaki Minami High School.

Nagasaki University has close ties with universities in the Netherlands, especially with Leiden University, where we have a long history of exchange including joint symposia and study programs, especially in the School of Medicine. Our Dutch Study Program of the School of Global Humanities and Social Sciences (SGHSS) also has many students with keen interests in Dutch society and culture. Before the new coronavirus, a lively exchange of students took place between the universities in the Netherlands and Nagasaki University. On November 12, two days after the visit, Ambassador Mr. Van der Vliet gave a special online lecture to the first-year students of SGHSS.

President Kohno explained about the role played by Nagasaki University in preventing the spread of coronavirus infection in cruise ships in Nagasaki Port in April 2020. Ambassador Mr. Van der Vliet expressed his hope that once the outbreak is over, active student and research exchange will resume.
