President's address at the signing ceremony with
the Department of Medical Sciences, Ministry of Public Health
March 25, 2006
It is my great honor to have concluded this academic agreement in
the presence of Dr. Paijit Warachit, Director General of the Department
of Medical Sciences, Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Pathom Sawanpanylert,
Director of the National Institute of Health, Department of Medical Sciences,
Ministry of Public Health, and Dr. Panita Pathipvanich, Director of the
Department of Internal Medicine, Lampang Hospital. On behalf of Nagasaki
University, I would like to express my sincerest appreciation to the people
who have devoted themselves to making the conclusion of this agreement
possible.
Looking back on exchange activities between Nagasaki University and the Ministry of Public Health, it all started in 1985 when Professor Igarashi and Professor Morita of Nagasaki University first joined in doing dengue research with the "JICA National Institute of Health Project". Since then we constantly continued our exchange of researchers, and have built a firm relationship of trust. One recent example is that of Professor Ariyoshi and Professor Yanai who for many years collaborated on cohort research with Thai researchers of the Ministry of Public Health in HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, respectively; these two distinguished gentlemen have recently become the faculty members of Nagasaki University. In addition, starting from April 1, Dr. Pathom will also take up the post of visiting professor of the Research Center for Tropical Infectious Diseases, Nagasaki University Institute of Tropical Medicine.
Nagasaki University will establish the Master of Tropical Science degree in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in FY 2006 to educate medical doctors who are more practiced in the field of tropical medicine. Therefore, enhancing the cooperative relationship with the National Institute of Health is very timely and is exactly what we needed to improve our training curriculum.
I believe that this academic agreement will invigorate our exchange more
than ever before, and it will eventually lead to the development of both
Japan and Thailand's infectious disease research.
