Seminar for Disaster and Radiation Medical Science (Global Training Course) in Fukushima

 On 27-30 November 2023, the seminar “Seminar for Disaster and Radiation Medical Science (Global Training Course)” was held in, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Master course students of Nagasaki University and Medical doctors of Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH) and Tri – Service General Hospital (TSGH), both of which are designated as Advanced Radiation Emergency Medical Center, participated in this seminar.

  On 28 November, participants visited Fukushima Medical University. At Fukushima Medical University, Professor Shunichi Yamashita, Vice President of FMU and Professor Arifumi Hasegawa delivered lectures entitled "Advanced Radiation Emergency Medical Centers and Nuclear Disaster Medical System in Japan". Then, participants visited TEPCO's Nuclear Decommissioning Museum. Staff of the museum explained the overview of the accident and decommission process of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) .

 On 29 November, participants visited The Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum (Futaba town) and Ukedo Elementary School (Namie town) which is designated as the disaster ruin. Then, professor Noboru Takamura and Mr Masato Kino, Counselor of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry delivered lectures entitled "Crisis Communication and Recovery Support at FDNPP" and "Current status of treated water and decommissioning a nuclear reactor the FDNPP", respectively at the Futaba Business Incubation and Community Center. Then, doctors of TVGH and TSGH overviewed the function of each hospital, including radiation emergency medical system in Taiwan. Then, all participants participated in the discussions.


 On 30 November, they visited Reprun Fukushima, where they were explained about the Interim Storage Facility, measured ambient dose rates and confirmed water quality at the monitoring field.

 In this seminar, doctors from Taiwan and students from Nagasaki University actually visited Fukushima Prefecture and discussed the nuclear emergency medical system, and learned about the current situation of Fukushima.
 Nagasaki University is going to organize seminars in Fukushima, especially for capacity building in the field of disaster and radiation medical science. Finally, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to all particioants in this seminar.
