* Reinforcement of open laboratory
    The progress and diversification in education research have been remarkable. Nagasaki University feels a strong need to boost development in advanced education, invigoration of education and research, and promotion of University reform. The University thus set up a regulation in 2002 to build an open laboratory when a new building construction or large scale renovation would take place, so that the University could launch project research with MEXT' s competitive grant for scientific research. As a result, the very first open laboratory was established in December, 2003 in the General Education and Research Building on Bunkyo Campus.
    As of January 1, 2005, the total area of open laboratories have expanded to 2,112m2, and a wide variety of research and development projects are being conducted with large external funding.
    Aside from faculty members of the University, the laboratories are open to people who are commissioned researchers, collaborative researchers from private enterprises, researchers of overseas institutes which have academic agreements with the University, and others to whom the President has given permission. In principle, open laboratories are research development facilities that welcome people from outside the University.
