Presidentfs Address for the Opening Ceremony
of the Liaison Office

November 2, 2006

President Ko Choong-Sik, Dean Kim Gui-Shik, Professor Choi Kan-Sik, Secretary Choi Jin-Ho, distinguished professors, staff members, and graduate students at Cheju National University, and alumni of Nagasaki University, good evening.

Today is one of the most significant days in Nagasaki Universityfs 150-year history.
It gives me the greatest pleasure to have a liaison office in Cheju National University in order to further strengthen the relationship between Cheju National University and Nagasaki University, in various fields of education and research activities.

As you well know, academic exchange program between our Universities commenced in 1991 with the gJapan-Korea International Symposium on Marine Sciencesh started by professors of the Faculty of Fisheries of Nagasaki University and the College of Ocean Sciences of Cheju National University.

Around the same time, ga Hi-tech Symposiumh organized by professors and students of the Faculty of Engineering, Nagasaki University and the College of Engineering, Cheju National University was also hold.

Two years ago, Nagasaki University established a new institute, the Institute for East China Sea Research, aiming to conserve and revive the marine environment and resources in the East China Sea. I believe that, in order to accomplish the objects of the Institute, close communication and mutual understanding among Japan, Korea, and China are vital. The liaison office should play an important role in realizing this purpose in the future.

Under these circumstances, today, we have taken the valuable first step toward reinforcing collaborative ties. On behalf of Nagasaki University, I would like to take this invaluable opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation to President Koh Choong-Suk for his generosity in agreeing to the opening of the liaison office, and also to Dean Kim Gui-Shik and other prominent professors for their kind cooperation on this matter.

I also convey my gratitude to professors and staff members of Nagasaki University for their continued contributions to this office.

I would like to conclude my speech by hoping for this officefs every success in enhancing cordial relations between our Universities.

Thank you so much for your kind attention.
