Nagasaki University Strategy for Fostering Young Scientists
Nagasaki University is going ahead with the "Nagasaki University Strategy for Fostering Young Scientists", using a grant from the FY 2007 Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology, (funding provided by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to boost suitable research environment for young scientistsユ independent research.
This program introduces the tenure track system in the Universityユs major research projects to produce many competent young research leaders as well as to establish a young scientist fostering system as a good example for creating a center for global research at a local university. Also, to improve the existing specially-appointed professor system will continue this new system.
The prospective young scientists will be given a position of assistant professor and provided with a suitable environment (research space, funding, etc.) for working solely on his/her independent research. This program aims to educate participants as young research leaders and after five years, make them eligible for promotion to associate professors by the leaders of the major research projects advising them on their research and by their appointed advisors helping them to run the laboratory and to participate in University operations. The candidates for the associate professors will be examined by the Tenure Track Review Committee and the Tenure Track Recommendation Committee in a highly transparent manner.
After this program is over, the tenure track system will be applied to the Graduate Schools of Science and Technology and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences as well as the Institute of Tropical Medicine, with an eye toward extending it to all other Graduate Schools.
