Introduction

History
Nagasaki university is located in Nagasaki City, which is the capital of Nagasaki Prefecture. The City lies astride a deep bay surrounded by mountains and is called the "Naples of the Orient" because of its good harbor and characteristic location. Nagasaki Prefecture is faced to the East China Sea shared with China, and other Asian countries.

Nagasaki is proud of its colorful history and natural beauty. For a long period of time, Nagasaki has been an international port town where European and Asian continental cultures have met and merged. Nagasaki was the key point in the modernization of Japan as the place of entry for science and culture developed from the outside world. In 1857, the first public medical school teaching western medicine was founded in Nagasaki and this school is the oldest predecessor of Nagasaki University.

However, on August 9, 1945, an atomic bomb completely destroyed Nagasaki Medical College. But this college was miraculously restored by tremendous efforts of the surviving staff.

In 1949, four years after the atomic bomb disaster, Nagasaki University was founded as a national university by integrating Nagasaki Medical College, Nagasaki College of Economics, Nagasaki Normal School and others. At the time of foundation, the University comprised five faculties, i.e., Education, Economics, Medicine, Pharmacy and Fisheries. Thereafter, the Faculties of Engineering, Dentistry and Environmental Studies were added consequently comprising eight faculties. Furthermore, the University has five post-graduate schools, one institute(the Institute of Tropical Medicine), one main Library with two branches, and many educational, research and sports facilities.

The Present; on the way to globalization

Nagasaki University aims at the production of highly qualified graduates who have broad intellectual horizons and can contribute to global peace and development. For this purpose, the University offers a high quality teaching program, where teachers receive an evaluation of their teaching quality. The quality of their research is also evaluated according to an internationally approved standard such as by impact factors and citation indexes. Research activity of staff is promoted extensively in all faculties in our university.

International exchange agreements have been concluded with 41 universities and institutions from all over the world, and research staff and students have communicated with each other in many scientific fields of mutual interest. In the Institute of Tropical Medicine, a special training program for tropical medicine has been offered for research and administrative staff in the developing countries of Southeast Asia, Africa and South America. Thus, Nagasaki not only symbolizes the place where East meets West, but also where friends meet friends.

University of the 21st century

Nagasaki University will take the position of a qualified institution for education and research in Asia. It produces many international joint studies including the following projects;

@ERegulation and prevention of radiation induced diseases.
@EPrevention and epidemiology of infectious diseases by acting the role of an international @ medical center of excellence for tropical medicine.
@EConservation of marine resources and environment in the East China Sea and Inland Sea of Japan.
@EProtection engineering against disaster, such as flooding, volcanic eruption and earthquake.
@ENursing and care of residents and city engineering in a city situated in a sloped urban area.

International Cooperation Programs

A one-year Training Course in Research for Tropical Medicine is provided since 1983 with the cooperation of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Core University Program on Tropical Medicine supported by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) has started in 2000 with the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Vietnam.

To further extend our knowledge and experience for Atomic Bomb Disease Diagnosis and Treatment, international cooperative projects with Chernobyl and Semipalatinsk have been conducted, especially through an International Telemedicine System.
