1. Research project:
 
The purpose of the major research project is to study a modality for a sustainable socio-cultural coexistence and conviviality in East Asia by understanding both historical and present cultural and economic exchange in East Asia, based on the concept of harmonious coexistence integrated in an interdisciplinary manner. The research focuses on potential of close and long-term interaction between various parties in East Asia through five aspects of coexistence: coexistence with nature, others, memory, coexisting organizations and markets.

2. Position details:
 
One position is available, and the successful candidate will be assigned to the Graduate School  of Fisheries Science and Environmental Studies.
Under the major research project, efforts will be devoted to carrying out interdisciplinary research on issues related to cultural and social coexistence using methods that combine the cultural and social sciences as well as natural and liberal arts sciences, focusing on East Asia. To promote the above, we have decided to hire a young researcher who is able to perform the following tasks: (1) actively participating in related symposiums, publications, and similar activities; (2) coordinating related projects and serving as a liaison between the parties involved to promote research; (3) providing instruction and advise to postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students. The three research fields listed below are assumed to be the primary areas; however, the target area of this project is not limited to these. Candidates are qualified as long as their research theme corresponds to  any one of three project fields: (1) coexistence with nature; (2) coexistence with others; and (3) coexistence with memory. We are expecting researchers who are willing to look at East Asia as a whole through cross-disciplinary studies including cultural and social sciences and beyond, while maintaining an established professional discipline.
(a) Research to seek an spatial coexistence among nature, people, and society in East Asian cities, using theories and methods related to city planning, landscape architecture, and geography.
(b) Research to envision a coexistence among culturally different people by clarifying the current form of mixed and coexisting culture in East Asian countries, using theories and methods from sociology, anthropology, and folklore.
(c) Research to explore the possibility of mutual understanding in terms of culture and people by clarifying the dispute in discussions, as well as clarifying coexistence related to memory in East Asia, using theories and methods from sociology, anthropology, folklore, and historical science.

3. Qualifications:
 
(1) Must hold a doctorate
(2) Must have achieved excellent research results in the target field
(3) Must have the ability to proactively promote research among graduate students and other parties
(4) Must not be concurrently employed by any other research institute, company, or any other organization during the period of employment specified below
(5) Ideally 40 years old or younger at the time of employment

4. Period of employment :
From September 1, 2011 through March 31, 2016
 
(Note that for candidates who currently live in countries other than Japan, the period of employment may start after November 1, 2011, due to examinations, interviews and other procedures).

5. Salary and research fund:
 
Salary: Approximately JPY 6,000,000 per year
(Standard Nagasaki University employment rules and regulations will be applied.)
Research fund (Start-up expenses): Approximately JPY 1,000,000 for the first year

6. Research facilities and equipment:
 
Facilities and equipment will be provided.

7. Required documentation:
 
Submit one set each (one original and one copy) of the documents below, either in Japanese or English.
(1) CV with ID picture taken within the last six months, carrying information such as educational background, employment history, type of academic degree, academic societies, awards received from academic societies, and qualifications. Specify an e-mail address for further contact: 1 set
(2) List of achievements (itemized into literature, academic papers, verbal presentations, and other. Specify refereed articles): 1 set

(3) Separate print of academic papers (up to five top works, copies are accepted. Attach an abstract for each paper (within 600 Japanese characters, or 600 words in English).

(5) The candidate's aspirations for participating in both education and research during his/her tenure. (1,000 characters in Japanese or 1,000 words in English) (A4 format, 1 or 2 sheets): 1 set
(6) History of fund raising (e.g. Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, subsidies, funded research, and joint research): 1 set
(7) Recommendation letter or contact address of persons (one or two) who can provide further perspective: 1 set

(1) Document s submitted shall not be returned.
(2) Candidates who pass document screening will be asked to give a presentation on their current research at seminar to be held at our facility (travel expenses paid). Also, on the day of the seminar, they will be asked to take an oral examination (date may be adjusted for those who currently live outside of Japan).
