　皆さん、入学おめでとう。
長きにわたるコロナ禍の中、長崎大学への入学を見事に果たした皆さんの努力と忍耐力は素晴らしいものだと思います。また、皆さんをサポートし続けた保護者の皆様や学校関係者の皆様方のご尽力に、心より敬意を表します。

　皆さんは、これから、新たな学びのステージへと進みます。それは、高校時代と比べると、より広く深い学びになるでしょう。例えると、広い海へ新しい船で、出航するようなものです。

　この旗をみてください。
バックの青い色は、コスミック・ブルー。長崎大学のシンボルカラーです。
宇宙や海洋の広大さを思わせる美しい青です。そして、そこに浮かぶ船。７つの帆を立てたこの船は、鎖国の時代に、長崎に入ってきたオランダの船をイメージしています。これが、我が大学のシンボルマークです。これから、皆さんは、それぞれの夢や希望をのせて、この船に乗り込み、出航するのです。
待ちに待った大冒険のはじまりです。

　さて、今日から君たちは、長崎大学丸に乗り込む私たちの仲間であるわけですが、
３つの基本的なことを心に留めて欲しいと思います。

　一つ目は、仲間を作ること。
仲間の存在は皆さんの大きな力になります。ひとりで漕いでも船はなかなか前に進みません。仲間がいれば、チームワークが発揮され、船はぐんぐんと前に進みます。そして、この４年間で、極めて強い絆で結ばれる仲間に出会う可能性は大いにあります。ぜひ、仲間を作りましょう。

　なぜ、私がそう思うのかには、理由があります。
昨年卒業したある学生の話です。君たちの先輩です。その先輩は、コロナ禍で経済的に困窮し、大学を辞めようと考えていたようです。ですが、この学生は大学のサポートや仲間の励ましを受けて、勉学を継続し、止めていた部活動も再開し、大きな飛躍を遂げました。コロナ禍の苦境をバネにして、自分の夢をつかみ取り社会人となりました。
また、別の学生は、コロナ禍で不安のなかに生きていました。SNSで瞬時に拡散されるさまざまな情報に惑わされ、迷い不安に恐れ慄き、同調圧力に押しつぶされそうになりました。そんな時に、対面授業が再開され徐々に人間関係を再構築し、サークル活動にも参加し、現在楽しく学んでいます。

　仲間は大事なのです。長崎大学には9000人の学生と年間480人以上の留学生、そして3200人の教職員が集まっています。みんな、君たちの仲間です。また、課外活動においては、若いエネルギーに溢れた120を超えるサークルが日々活動しています。例えどんなに小さな集まりでもいいでしょう。積極的に参加してください。そこで、自分の思いや不安を言葉にしてください。夢や希望を語ってください。仲間と共に『良く学び、よく遊べ』。これが、一つ目の基本です。

　二つ目の基本は、自ら行動を起こすこと。
航海に例えましょう。高校までの航海の仕方は、例えば長崎の港を出発して、約２０キロ先の世界遺産の軍艦島を目指すようなものでした。目的地ははっきりとし、波の穏やかな日を選び、決められた航路を、まっすぐ進みました。多少の波はあったでしょうが、無事辿り着き、君たちは、ここにいます。
　大学の学びは、そう簡単にはいきません。世界遺産の軍艦島から、五島灘を越えて、東シナ海へ出るようなものです。波はさらに高く、風も強いでしょう。まず、どこに行くか自ら考えて目的地を決めないといけません。そこに到達するまでの経路は自分で、海図を読み、天気予報を調べ、どのくらいの食糧と水を用意すべきかなどを自らで決定して進みます。インターネットから情報を得ることも可能です。勿論、友人や先輩、教員と帆を上げて、一緒に進むことも選択肢の一つになるでしょう。
このように、大学の学びは、多種多様です。
　そして、学びには失敗がつきものです。自分で考えて、自分で行動し、全力を尽くした結果、失敗することもあります。その時は、がっかりするでしょう。しかし、それは、貴重な体験であり、必ず将来の成功につながる糧となります。失敗を恐れず、どんどんトライしてください。我々は、勇気ある挑戦を、君たちの大冒険を、全力でバックアップするつもりです。

　ここまでをまとめると、第一の基本は、仲間を持つこと、第二の基本は、自ら行動すること。君たちは、きっと、この二つのことは、容易にできると思います。その能力は十分に備わっているはずです。そして、第三の基本。

　それは、大きな視野を持ち、人生の方向性を定めること。
３０年後の君たちを想像してみてください。その頃、日本の人口は、１億人を切り、生産年齢人口も50％を割り込んでいます。どの業界でも人手不足。ドライバー不足で荷物が届かない。コンビニエンスストアの品ぞろえは少なくなり欲しい物が手に入らない。水道料金は大幅に値上がりし、ゴミの回収もできない。生活インフラの維持さえ危うい。そんな悲しい未来の日本の経済成長率は１％未満。先進国にも留まることはできない。
　さらに、世界規模では、人口爆発により、環境破壊、気候温暖化、生物多様性の喪失、新たな脅威となる感染症の出現。宗教や国家間の紛争による戦争、食糧危機、貧困問題等の顕著化。

　これらは、あくまで悲観的な想像です。過去のデータの積み上げにより、成立した単なる予測にすぎません。３０年後の未来は、誰にもわかりません。１０年後でも、５年先でさえも、わかりません。なぜならば、世界は、猛スピードで進んでいるからです。
　我々が望んでいるのは、君たちが単に、未来を予測する能力だけを身につけることではありません。長崎大学が望んでいるのは、君たちが大学時代に、何かの問題を解決しようという思いを持つこと、それを実現するための人生の方向性を持つことです。

　少し考えてみてください。
今、あなたの身の回りで、最も困ったことは何でしょうか？　あなたの故郷の街が抱える最大の問題は何でしょうか？　日本が、世界が直面している諸問題の中で、あなたはどういうことに興味がありますか？　その問題を解決するために、将来、あなたに何ができそうですか？
いかがでしょうか。
　三つ目の基本は、このような疑問に答える姿勢を持つことです。大きな視野を持ち、何かの問題を解決しよう、そのために生きて行こうと、方向性を見定めることです。
　
　長崎大学には明確な方向性があります。
「長崎に根づく伝統的文化を継承しつつ、豊かな心を育み、地球の平和を支える科学を創造することによって、社会の調和的発展に貢献する」
これが、長崎大学の理念です。ですから、この４年間で、まずは、長崎の文化や歴史を学んでください。また、世界で唯一、原爆に被災した医科大学をもち、被災から立ち直った大学であることを意識してください。平和への思いを大切にしてください。
　さらに、本学は『プラネタリー・ヘルス、地球の健康に貢献する大学』をスローガンに、２０２０年より全学的な活動をはじめました。プラネタリー・ヘルスに関する諸問題の解決のために、研究や教育を推進しています。ぜひ、皆さんも参加して学んでください。

　未来は与えられるものではありません。未来は、作るものです。
未来は、君たちが、仲間と共に、自ら行動し、作り上げてゆくものです。そのために、君たちは、大学で学んでゆくのです。

　もう一度、長崎大学のシンボルマークをみてみましょう。
オーシャンブルーの中を進む私たちの船です。どんな荒波が、どんな未来が待ち受けているか誰にもわかりません。しかし、大丈夫です。歴史ある長崎大学丸は、いつも未来を切り拓いてきました。これからも前に進みます。さあ、出航の時間です。ここにいる仲間と共に、元気いっぱい、青空に帆を揚げて、汽笛を鳴らしましょう。
　
本日は、入学、おめでとう。そして、仲間になってくれて、ありがとう。

Entrance Ceremony Speech by the President of Nagasaki University

Congratulations to all incoming students on your admission to Nagasaki University.
I would like to express my deep respect to all of you for your persistent efforts and perseverance amid the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. I would also like to extend my congratulations and sincere appreciation to your families, school staff, and all others who have supported you to this day.

Today, you are going to enter a new stage of learning, which will provide you broad and deep knowledge compared to that of high school. It is just like you are embarking on a voyage across the ocean in a new boat.

Look at this university flag.
This flag’s base color is cosmic blue, the symbol color of Nagasaki University. This is a beautiful blue reminiscent of the vast expanse of the cosmos or sea. This flag features a sailing ship with seven sails on the sea, which is the university’s symbol, created in the image of a Dutch ship that arrived at the port of Nagasaki during the time when Japan was closed to the outside world. Now, each of you are going to get on the ship and begin a voyage to your dreams and hopes. This is the beginning of a long-awaited great adventure.

Today, you became one of the crew members boarding the ship of Nagasaki University. Taking this opportunity, I would like to talk about three important points to keep in mind.
　
The first important point is to make a lot of friends.
The presence of friends will turn out to be a strong driving force for you. If you row a boat on your own, it will not be able to make headway easily. However, if you work with other people, your ship will move forward smoothly with the power of teamwork. In the coming four years, you will have many opportunities to encounter various people, with whom you can share strong ties. Enjoy interacting with other people and make a lot of friends.

There is a reason why I encourage you to make a lot of friends. This is a story about a student who graduated from Nagasaki University last year. The student was thinking of leaving the University due to financial difficulties resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he was able to continue his studies and resume his club activities with support from the University and encouragement from his friends and peers, eventually making a great leap forward. Using his difficulties due to COVID-19 as a springboard, he grabbed his dreams and went out into the world.

Another student was spending her days in fear and dread amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. She was bombarded with a large amount of varied information immediately disseminated on social media, consumed by anxiety, and almost overwhelmed by peer pressure. Just about at that time, face-to-face classes were resumed. She gradually rebuilt her personal relationships and started to participate in club activities. Now, she is enjoying her campus life.

It is important to have a lot of friends. Nagasaki University has about 9,000 students, more than 480 international students each year, and 3,200 faculty and staff members. They are all your friends. For extracurricular activities, there are more than 120 clubs, in which students are energetically engaging in various activities. You are encouraged to actively participate in such club activities—however small they may be. Use such an opportunity to express what you think as well as your concerns, dreams and hopes. “Study hard and play hard” with your friends, which is the first important point to keep in mind.

The second important point is to act on your own initiative.
Let me compare life to a voyage by sea. In your high school days, it is just like you left the port of Nagasaki for Gunkanjima, a small island located about 20 kilometers off the coast of Nagasaki. Toward a clear goal, you steered a steady course on days with gentle waves. Sometimes, there might have been large waves, but you arrived safe and sound to be here today.

As for studies in university, however, you will not have it so easy. It is just like you are leaving Gunkanjima, a World Heritage site, and venturing out to the East China Sea, beyond the Goto-nada Sea. You will see much larger waves and much stronger winds. First of all, you need to determine your destination on your own. To arrive there, you need to decide on which path to take by reading a sea chart and checking the weather forecast, and you need to prepare the food and water necessary for the voyage. You can obtain information on the Internet. As a possible option, you can take the voyage together with your friends, senior students, or teachers. Like this, the contents of studies at university are of great variety.

Remember that failure is an integral part of learning. Sometimes, you may fail after thinking and acting on your own and doing your best. On such an occasion, you will feel discouraged. However, such a failure provides you with invaluable experience, which is necessary for your further growth and future success. Take on new challenges without fear of failure. We will fully support your bold challenges and your great adventure.

So far, I have told you about two important points: making friends and acting on your own initiative. I believe that these are achievable, given your abilities.

The third important point is to set your own direction in life from a broader perspective.
Imagine what you will be like 30 years from now. By that time, Japan’s population will fall below 100 million, with the working-age population accounting for less than 50%. Every industry will be facing a labor shortage. Due to a shortage of drivers, packages will not be delivered quickly. At convenience stores, which will be forced to offer a limited range of products, it may be difficult for you to get what you want. Water rates will be raised rapidly, and garbage will not be collected regularly. It might be difficult to maintain social infrastructure that is indispensable in people’s daily life. In such a bleak future, Japan’s economic growth rate will be less than 1%. Japan will no longer remain as an advanced country.

On a global level, moreover, population explosion will pose various challenges to humans, including environmental destruction, climate warming, the loss of biodiversity, and the emergence of a new threat of infection. Religious conflicts, disputes or wars between countries, food-supply crises, and the issue of poverty will also become increasingly salient.

This is merely a pessimistic prediction based on the data accumulated thus far. No one could ever predict what the future 30 years from now will be like, or even 10 years or 5 years from now. It is because the world is changing at a high speed.

What is expected of you is not to merely acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to predict the future. Nagasaki University expects you, while in school, to identify the challenges you want to address, motivate your willingness to tackle the challenges, and find a direction in life to resolve the challenges.

Just think for a moment. What do you find inconvenient or troubling around you? What kind of problem is your hometown facing? Japan and the world are facing various issues. What types of issues are you most interested in? What do you think you can do in the future to resolve these issues? Please take time to consider.

It is significant to develop a positive attitude to respond to these challenges. In other words, it is important to identify the challenges you want to tackle and find a direction in your life to work on them.
　
Nagasaki University has set a clear direction, as stated in its philosophy: “Nagasaki University contributes to the improvement of a well-balanced society by transmitting its inheritance of the traditional culture rooted in Nagasaki, cultivating a fertile creative sense in students, and developing innovative science for world peace.”

First, you are expected to learn about the culture and history of Nagasaki for four years from now. In addition, please renew your awareness that Nagasaki University, which has the only medical college in the world ever to have suffered a nuclear attack, is an academic institution that has risen from the ashes. Please respect and cherish your wish for world peace.

Under the slogan of “For Planetary Health, Nagasaki University,” in 2020 we launched university-wide activities to promote research and education aimed at resolving various issues related to “planetary health.” You are highly encouraged to participate in those activities.

Your future is not created by others but by yourself.
You need to work together with your friends to shape your future on your own. That is why you are here to study.

Look at the symbol printed on the university flag again. Our ship is sailing on the ocean blue. Nobody knows what the future will hold for us. However, you don’t have to worry. The ship of Nagasaki University with a long history has always opened the way to the future. We will keep going forward. It is time to sail toward the future, together with your peers here. Raise the sails and sound the whistle powerfully.

Once again, congratulations on your admission to Nagasaki University today. We welcome you as a crew member of the ship of Nagasaki University.
