Symposium for project "Study on Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases in Vietnam"

  On November 21, Symposium for project "Study on Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases in Vietnam*" was held at Nagasaki University Sakamoto Campus, Ryojun Auditorium.
*Nagasaki University operates a Research Station in Vietnam as one of 11 centers around the world under the "Research Base for Emerging and Re-emerging Infections (Overseas Research Centers)" project (research commissioned by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED)).

  In attendance were President Nagayasu of Nagasaki University, Director Kaneko of the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Director Hasebe of the Research Institute for Infectious Diseases of Asia and Africa in Vietnam, and other researchers involved in this project.
There were ten participants from Vietnam, including Dr. Nguyen Truong Son, former Vice  Minister of Health of Vietnam, and Dr. Le Thi Quynh Mai, Senior Expert (former Deputy Director) from the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE), a collaborating institution, and six from the Nha Trang Pasteur Institute, a collaborating institution, including Dr. Do Thai Hung, Director.
Also in attendance were program officers from AMED, the National Center for Global Health and Medicine (NCGM), which is a sub-institution of this project, and researchers from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, The Research Institute of Tuberculosis, Kumamoto University, and Kyoto University, all of whom are conducting research using the Vietnam site.

  At the symposium, the progress and results of Japan-Vietnam joint research on infectious diseases such as dengue fever, diarrheal, severe pediatric pneumonia, zoonosis, COVID-19, drug-resistant bacteria, tuberculosis, and AIDS were presented, and a lively exchange of opinions took place.
The symposium was live-streamed  via Zoom, and was widely attended by those who had pre-registered.

  On the following day, NIHE Senior Expert Mai and others visited President Nagayasu in his office. In the presence of Dr Ito, Trustee (Student Affairs and International Affairs), Director Kaneko, Chief Representative Hasebe, and Professor Yoshida Ray-myint, they discussed  the longstanding cooperative relationship and  further academic exchange in the future.
