Signing Ceremony for Academic Cooperation Agreement with Federal University of Pernambuco (Brazil)

 On March 7, 2024, a signing ceremony was held at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) in Recife, Brazil, to sign an academic cooperation agreement and a memorandum of understanding for the establishment of a research station and research collaboration based on the agreement. The ceremony was attended by Dr. Alfredo Macedo Gomes, President of the Federal University of Pernambuco, Dr. Moacyr Cunha de Araújo Filho, Vice President of UFPE, Dr. José Luiz de Lima Filho, Director of the Keizo Asami Institute (iLIKA), and officials from the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Health. Mr. Hiroaki Sano, Consul General of Japan in Recife, Mr. Masayuki Eguchi, Chief Representative of JICA Brazil Office and Prof. Jiro Yasuda, Deputy Director of Emerging Virus Research at the National Research Center for the Control and Prevention of Infectious Diseases, Nagasaki University.
 
 Nagasaki University and UFPE have a history of exchange in terms of joint research and acceptance of graduate students since the signing of a MOU for Joint Research on Zika Virus Infectious Diseases in 2016. With the expansion of research projects in Brazil following the adoption of the AMED Japan Program for Infectious Diseases Research and Infrastructure in Brazil, Nagasaki University and UFPE have concluded an academic cooperation agreement and a MOU and have established the University's Brazil project station in iLIKA.
 
 This academic cooperation agreement is expected to lead to the provision of knowledge on infectious disease control , especially preemptive measures against emerging infectious diseases and public health, the development and introduction of a comprehensive viral infection diagnosis system, and the development of human resources to utilize this system in Brazil.
